New Delhi: Noted cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan of Escorts Heart Institute has been sacked from the post of executive director. The official reason cited by the management is conflict of interest between Trehan and the institute management. The hospital management has also lodged an FIR against him.
A face-off between Fortis management and leading cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan was brewing for a while. Dr Trehan was sacked from Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre on Friday, and Saturday morning he was barred from attending to his patients. The doctor, however, refused to resign and now the Delhi High court has allowed him unrestricted entry.
“My contract is for 20-years, which is why I came from America. I spent my own money, blood and resources to build this hospital where it stand today. Who are they to stop me from treating these patients,” said Trehan.
Dr Trehan has been the executive director and head of cardiothoracic surgery at escorts since 1988. The rift between him and escorts surfaced after Fortis acquired 90 per cent stake in escorts in 2005. The hospital management filed a case of vandalism against him, after patients' relatives forcefully opened Dr Trehan's sealed office and the locked operation theatre Saturday morning.
“We have terminated the administrative role, and asked him yesterday to give up his administrative functions. As a doctor and a physician we have told him he is more than welcome and he can meet his patients. He continues to be an investor as he own 10 per cent stake in the hospital,” said Shivinder Mohan Singh MD, Fortis Healthcare.
The management has cited clash of interest between escorts and Dr Trehan's project—Medicity in Gurgaon to justify his removal. However it's the patients who've suffered in the chaos.
“My brother was to be operated upon today. This morning we were told it won't happen as Dr Trehan has left,” said Anil Garg Patient's relative.
“This so called heart institute is known for Dr Trehan. Escort is just the building but the institute is that of Dr Trehan. If he is out, then there is nothing more is left in the institute,” said another patient’s family member.
The high drama at Escorts isn’t over yet. Most doctors are supporting Dr Trehan so the Fortis management clearly has a mutiny at its hand. And the next few days will determine who wins this battle of nerves.
