New Delhi: The government on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that it has prepared a draft legislation to regulate placement agencies in the city.

The court was hearing a plea by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan that alleged that some of the placement agencies were indulging in trafficking of children.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice RS Endlaw told the government to speed up the procedure of enacting the law. The government said the process may take four to five months.

A NGO alleged that some of the placement agencies were indulging in trafficking of children.

"We expect the city government to...try to have the statute soon," bench observed.

The NGO sought the immediate registration of all placement agencies operating in the capital to prevent alleged trafficking of women and minors.

The court also directed the government to file a status report on the actions taken by it to check the danger.

During the hearing, the government told the court: "Many children have been rescued from various premises and have either been handed over to their families or sent to rehabilitation centres."
