Chennai: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has put out a draft Masterplan which will determine the city's growth till 2026.
The Masterplan promises more infrastructures for the IT sector, which means expanding the Chennai Metropolitan Area further.
The CMDA also plans to 'decongest' the city, by setting up metro and satellite townships.
The estimated cost of the project is around 45,000 crore rupees.
"The Masterplan cannot be divorced from Reality and the reality is that IT is coming up in a big way and is providing jobs for youth." Says vice chairman
CMDA, R Santhanam.
"This plan has been drafted in a way as to ensure a peaceful life for the people of Chennai." Says chairman CMDA, Minister Parithi Ilam Vazhuthi.
Consumer groups however, say the Masterplan does not address issues like solid waste management, flood control, conservation of ecologically sensitive places and preservation of heritage sites.
"The plan talks of a vision, which is just a vision, namesake and doesn't have any objectives to fulfill the vision. We don't know why the plan is being drawn up because it simply seems like a bureaucratic exercise,” says Rajesh Rangarajan
of Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group.
The Masterplan is open for public consultation till August 31.
So this is one more chance for the people and the authorities to make Chennai a better place to live in.
And with one more day to go, Chennaiites still have a chance to make a difference.
