Hyderabad: It's a day M Raju Revu will probably remember for the rest of his life. He has topped the Civil Services exam and how! An OBC candidate, Raju comes from an extremely humble background.

His father is a farmer in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district and after completing his engineering, Raju wrote the UPSC exam 2 years ago.

He cleared the exam but his rank wasn't good enough to get him the administrative services.

He got the police services instead but Raju tried again because for him being an IAS officer wasn't just a dream, it was a necessity.

“My sister died because she couldn't reach the hospital on time because there was no transport. I wanted to be an IAS officer to solve my peoples' problems,” said Raju.

Ranked way below at 219 but loving it nevertheless is Rahul Mandarani. An engineer from Surat, he was so nervous about his results that he flew down to Delhi to check it personally and his trip was worth it.

“It was the happiest 15 minutes of my life,” said Rahul.

Of the 474 candidates who have cleared the UPSC exams, 89 will join the IAS, 103 will train for the IPS and 20 for the IFS.

For the 500-odd candidates about to enter the great Indian bureaucracy, it's a moment that has come after a lot of hard work but the challenge ahead is much tougher. The challenge to rescue the bureaucracy from the image crisis it now suffers.
