New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has written to the 2012 London Olympics organisers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), complaining about sponsor Dow Chemicals lying that there are no pending cases over the Bhopal gas tragedy. In a letter sent to the IOC the IOA demanded that Dow chemicals should be dropped as sponsors for the London Olympics.
"A false campaign has been launched by the Dow Chemical's saying that matter has been settled. It is not correct. The case is still pending in the court and no final compensation has been made. It is IOA's considered opinion that Dow Chemical's should be removed as the sponsors of the Games," the letter, written by IOA Acting President Vijay Kumar Malhotra to IOC President Jacques Rogge, said.
The letter comes a day after Dow Chemical's branding was withdrawn from the wrap around the Olympic Stadium in London.
But the IOA is not convinced that the move is enough and believes justice will be done towards the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy only if the company is kicked out altogether.
The campaigners had called the removal's of the logo a moral victory for the Bhopal gas tragedy victims.
Bhopal activist Satinath Sarangi welcomed Dow's move to remove the logo from London Olympics and added that he wanted India to boycott the Games until the company is dropped as a sponsor
"It is a small step and it is a small victory in our efforts to get Dow dumped by the London Organising Committee of the Olympics. We hope that the Indian government will now summon the political will to announce to the London Olympics Committee in clear terms that it will boycott the Olympics, so long as Dow Chemicals continues to remain a sponsor," said Sarangi.
Some UK parliamentarians also signed a petition asking London Olympics Association to drop Dow from sponsoring the Games.
Dow has been trying to look for long term sustained partnership with the Olympic Games but campaigners say they will keep the pressure so that the company is not associated with Olympics even during or after the London Games.
