Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): It was just by chance that doctors at the Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Bhopal (GMC) found out that medicines meant for animals were being administered to patients.

Kitamin Hydrochloride, a drug used to induce anesthesia in animals has been administered on several patients.

However, there were no reports of any disastrous effects that the drug had had on the patients.

"We have blacklisted the company that was supplying the drug and suspended the storekeeper and the doctor concerned," Madhya Pradesh Health Minister, Ajay Bishnoi said.

The authorities are now covering up the fact that no one bothered to check the medicines before they were used.

Their justification - the packing of both the drug for animals and humans look similar.

Doctors also say that it is not such a 'gross error' as there isn't much difference between Kitamin used for humans and animals.

"As an expert I would like to say that there is not much of a difference between the two. The only difference is that of the dosage," member Department of Anesthesia, GMC, Dr R P Kaushal says,

Laghu Udyog Nigam, the nodal agency for Government procurement is washing its hands off the controversy.
