Mumbai: A speeding car in Malad, driven by a 22-year-old engineering student and his friends, injured 11 people in the early hours of Monday morning.
Sunil Shah was taken to the Metropolitan Magistrate's court in Borivli in Mumbai on Monday where he managed to get bail.
"Sunil was released on cash bail of Rs 7,000," announced his lawyer Rajesh Shrivastava.
Sunil and four of his friends were driving from Kandivli to Malad. Sunil was at the wheel and was reportedly overspeeding.
The car was spotted by the traffic police who gave them a chase. To dodge the police, Sunil sped further and rammed into three auto-rickshaws before knocking down and injuring 11 pedestrians.
Passersby quickly gathered and stopped the vehicle. While three of Sunil’s co-passengers managed to escape, two were nabbed by locals and handed over to the police.
Eyewitnesses claim the boys were driving under influence. “Yes, when we caught them we could smell the alcohol on their breath,” recalled one eyewitness Imtiyaz.
But Sunil refutes the claims and says he wasn't drunk and was not even at the wheel. He was made to undergo a blood alcohol test and the results are awaited.
