New Delhi: Drunken driving resulted in another tragedy late on Friday night when the teenaged son of the Samajwadi Party MLA from Ghazipur was arrested in Lucknow after he ran over pavement dwellers in the Hazratganj area, killing three of them and critically injuring six.
Nineteen-year-old Kashif Abbas - the son of MLA Shadab Fatima – was at the wheel of the Tata Safari fitted with a red beacon.
The vehicle first rammed into two motorcyclists and then crushed seven sleeping pavement dwellers near the Parivartan Chowk police station.
Initial investigations confirm the vehicle was being driven by Abbas.
The Tata Safari – bearing the registration number UP32CA7640 – crushed the people sleeping on the pavement. Most of them were seriously injured. We are investigating further,” said SP Luckow, Akhil Kumar.
He was apprehended by passers-by and handed over to the police. “We heard a crash and saw two motorcycles were crushed by the Safari. We saw two men running out and there was one boy in the vehicle. The crowd tried to beat him but some people intervened,” says an eyewitness.
