DSO hurt during smuggling chase

CHENNAI: The District Supply Officer (DSO) was badly injured when a van smuggling PDS rice rammed into his jeep during a hot chase near Thuckalay on Thursday. Four other officials were also injured in the accident.
Acting on a tip-off, DSO Paneer Selvam, along with a team was conducting a vehicle check near Thuckalay in the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram NH on Thursday. When the team signalled a speeding Maruti Omni to stop at Mulagumoodu, the driver sped fast. The officials started chasing the van on their jeep. When the jeep cornered the van after a chase for 4 km near Kaattathurai, the driver rammed the jeep and fled the scene.
The DSO’s jeep lost control and hit a roadside electric post leaving the DSO and the others with severely injured.
