New Delhi: Students of all colleges under Delhi University protested at the ABVP’s actions on Monday.
A large crowd of students reached the vice chancellors office shouting anti-ABVP slogans.
The Delhi University was swarming with police personnel on Monday as the students group, ABVP, went on a rampage in the Arts Faculty to protest against what they termed ‘objectionable material' in the BA Programme.
The students stormed into the History department, which is housed in the Arts Faculty complex, and broke furniture and windows panes.
The protest, which had started off as a demonstration where a memorandum was to be presented to the head of the History department, soon deteriorated into a brawl, with the student leaders barging into the department and destroying university property while shouting slogans.
Incidentally, a fortnight ago, ABVP had similarly staged a demonstration in front of the V-C's office against parts of the history syllabus of the BA Programme, which they said made objectionable references to the Ramayan and its characters.
Reacting to the incident, both teachers and students said the protest could have been without the accompanying violence.
"This is a democratic institute and demonstration could have been peaceful. Debate is what is needed, not violence,” said Ratan Lal, who is teaching at Hindu College,
The university has lodged an FIR against six ABVP activists. Meanwhile, a group of students, including those of the History department, are planning to organise a mass rally at the university on Tuesday in protest against the ABVP action.
Member of the group, Krantikari Yuva Sangathan, Maya John said, "The rally will be a protest against communalisation of the university and the attack on academic freedom."
Authorities are gearing up to face more such protests from various factions.
"We were aware of the protest by ABVP and had therefore prepared by informing the police."
Sources said security will be tightened,” said a member of the proctor’s office.
