Click to play videoNew Delhi: After weeks of violent protests by 4,000-odd construction workers from the subcontinent demanding better wage and working conditions, the United Arab Emirates has ordered a wage review for all migrant workers.
The UAE cabinet has asked the Ministry of Labour to prepare a proposal examining a wage increase.
Meanwhile, the families of lakhs of Indians working in Dubai are elated and consider it a Diwali bonus for them.
“The UAE government has been helpful to us,” an Indian working in Dubai said.
The Indian mission has welcomed the move describing it as constructive and Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi believes it is a personal victory for him.
“This will help Indian workers and I am very happy that the Government took this step,” Vayalar Ravi said.
But this relief came only after an anxious wait. Last week, 90 Indians were arrested for violent protests. Over 4,500 South Asians, mostly Indians, had been taken into custody, however 3,900 of them were later released.
But for many Indians working as day labourers the fight is not over yet as some private companies in UAE are still withholding wages and continuing to violate labour laws.
