Dubai: The Williams sisters moved into the singles quarter-finals of the Dubai Open, while former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic is now out of contention after losing in straight sets to Kaia Kanepi.
In her first career victory over a Top 5 player, Kanepi won the first set easily at 6-2. She wrapped up the match in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
She will now play Elena Vesnina of Russia in the next round.
In the other matches, top seed Serena Williams made her way into the quarters with a 6-4, 6-2 win over China's Zheng Jie.
She will now face Serbia's Ana Ivanovic who was up against unseeded Frenchwoman Camille Pin.
She won her match 6-2, 7-6.
The elder Williams sister, Venus, too, won her third round match in straight sets, beating France's Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-2 in the third round.
Virginie Razzano of France defeated Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 while holder Elena Dementieva of Russia knocked out Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic, seeded eight, put out France's Camille Pin 6-2, 7-6 while fifth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva advanced after another Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli retired with blisters on both feet when trailing 5-2 in the first set.
