Dumped after birth, Gujarat baby gets new life

Ahmedabad: A baby boy - found abandoned in a garbage bin in Ahmedabad - has now got a new lease of life.

Within hours of being born, the baby was dumped in a garbage bin at Hatkeshwar area of the city on Sunday.

Luckily for the infant, local residents noticed his cry and rushed him to a hospital, where he is recovering.

Eyewitnesses saw the baby being dumped by a woman who drove a Honda City car.

"I saw a woman quickly get out of the car, put something inside and drive away. It was only later when we heard cries of the baby that we knew it was abandoned,” said a local Meghnath Nattar.

The infant may soon have new parents. Savita Nadia and her husband Rajesh, who works in a chemical factory, want to adopt the baby.

They have been childless for the past 15 years. "I have prayed for so many years for a child. I feel it’s my own,” said Savita Nadia.

Social worker Harshad Patel, who rushed the baby to hospital along with others, says he is happy he could save the child.

"The doctors said if we were half an hour late, it could have died,” he says.

Patel says he will now help the parents complete the legal formalities for adoption.
