New Delhi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who was awarded six years rigorous imprisonment for illegal possession of weapons in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, has received a copy of the judgement and will be taken back to Yerwada jail in Pune.

The actor – sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case – was granted an interim bail by Supreme Court.

He has been arrested and is going to be taken back to the Pune jail on Monday evening. He will spend at least a week — if not a month — in the jail as his lawyers file a bail application in the Supreme Court.

Former Mumbai police commissioner, YP Singh said, "Sanjay Dutt's case might not be treated in isolation as parity is an important consideration."

Meanwhile, Public Prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam added, "TADA court has given certified copies of the judgement to the accused. The entire process of the accused getting bail could take more than two months."

"We will recommend that the prosecuting agency enhance the sentence to the accused," he added.

Sanjay Dutt had begun serving his sentence on July 31 — for procuring guns from gangsters linked to the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people — but walked out on bail three weeks later.

He had appealed against his sentence in the Supreme Court and was allowed bail until he was served a copy of the judgement by the special Mumbai court which sentenced him.

His lawyers had then contended that they could not argue his case in the absence of a copy of the judgement, which was originally to be served on Thursday.

The Supreme Court had granted the actor interim bail on August 20, and said he could apply for regular bail and file an appeal against the verdict after he got a copy of the judgement.

During his temporary reprieve, Dutt has been busy completing his movie contracts, with six movies in production and other commitments, which had been left half undone when he was sent to jail.

Dutt was among 100 people found guilty by the court which sentenced 12 of them to death and 20 to life in prison while handing varied jail terms and fines to the rest.

Sanjay Dutt had been arrested on April 19, 1993 in the case and had at that time spent 16 months behind bars as an undertrial. A huge controversy had been raked up when he got bail and walked out of prison in spite of being charged under TADA.

A few months ago, the actor was acquitted on terrorism and conspiracy charges in the same case. Interestingly, while Sanjay Dutt was absolved on terrorism and conspiracy charges, his accomplices were found guilty under the TADA.

Manzoor, who had carried the gun from Dutt's bungalow, was found guilty under TADA and Zaibunissa Kazi was convicted under TADA for concealing the consignment.
