New Delhi: The countdown for General Elections has begun. While the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) national executives are drafting its political resolution in Bangalore, the Congress has to decide the time of the General Elections, which will be held either in December this year or April next year.

Many within the Congress feel that calling elections in December-January might prove out to be beneficial as the UPA government has got the NSG waiver and the 123 agreement is also likely to be clinched by the end of September. So, the partymen believe that the Indo-US nuclear deal will be the main election plank.

And with inflation showing the first signs of a downturn, sources say the move to consider a December general elections is a serious one.

"Confidentially say that we face the election in all these elections going in the state and also the Lok Sabha on a confident ground,” says Spokesperson Veerappa Moily.

He also stated that party chief Sonia Gandhi has sent a strong message.

"She had a very strong message to the party men and the organisation at all level.

Things have to be implemented with lateral spirit as we are facing both lok sabha and assembly elections, she also emphasised the fact that the menace of pota system should be put to an end", he said

This time, even some key UPA allies like Lalu's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) are veering to a December General Election. The floods in Bihar, Lalu hopes, will wash away the good image of Nitish Kumar.

Aware that the Congress has not ruled out a December election, the BJP too is now gearing up and looking for potential allies.

Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu is a key target while the Amarnath land controversy is being pitched as a national issue by the BJP.

"This even losing a sense of appreciation at what is in national interest and what is in national peril," BJP Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

So, if the General Elections are held in December, the UPA Government will have to take a call by the end of September.
