Raj's party says buy mangoes from Marathis

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has something new to chew on in its campaign against the north Indians in the state: mangoes.

The party has put up posters all over Panvel, near Mumbai, asking people to buy mangoes only from Maharashtrian fruit vendors. "The bhaiyyas (north Indian) have taken over the mango trade in the city, while our Marathi people are suffering. They send all their earnings to their native places and our state doesn’t benefit from them,” said Prakash More, spokesperson for the MNS in Panvel Taluka.

Though North-Indian vendors haven't been directly threatened yet, however the MNS activities are making them uneasy. Many Maharashtrian mango sellers though seem to be backing the MNS initiative.

Fruit vendor Baby Tai supports MNS as he says, “ The bhaiyyas should be removed from Maharashtra. They purchase from the wholesale market and we have to purchase from them. So naturally we have to sell at a higher price.”

From taxis to vada pavs to mangoes - the MNS sure seems like it wants to become the crusader for everything Maharashtrian before the Shiv Sena does.
