EC chiefs disagree, sometimes

New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy admits that he and his senior colleagues, the two Election Commissioners, sometimes disagree but insists they always resolve differences.

“When three people are there three opinions might come but ultimately the test of the whole thing is that how do you resolve it, how do you come to a final conclusion—it has always been like that. So you can’t foreclose anyone on a particular issue. But the question is whether when three of us sit together to discuss an issue how do we resolve it,” Gopalaswamy told CNN-IBN when asked about his view on Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla.

The BJP has demanded that Chawla excuse himself from a panel which is hearing a complaint against the party. The party fears that Chawla won’t be fair, as it has challenged his appointment as Election Commissioner.

Asked for his opinion on former Election Commissioners joining politics after retirement, Gopalaswamy said: “Nothing under the government—no appointment should be taken under the government.”

“You shouldn’t join a join a political party and contest on its election symbol, but I am saying this with a very clear understanding that if anybody wants to contest as an Independent nobody should be prevented—but not any political party,” he said.

The Election Commission has been praised for conducting violence-free elections in Uttar Pradesh—a feat in the turbulent state.

Political parties have alleged that the Election Commission was too strict during the marathon seven-phase elections but grudgingly admit the process was fair and free.
