Govt watchdog flays EC Chawla

New Delhi: Election Commissioner Navin Chawla is in the news once again. And this time it’s for all the wrong reasons.

The Auditor General's office has accused Chawla of misusing his powers when he was chairman of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB).

Chawla, as chairman, allegedly deployed security guards meant for securing power plants at his house. The arrangement continued even after he became Election Commissioner, and the bill that Chawla and another ex-Chairman ran up was Rs 44 lakh.

Documents with CNN-IBN show that no prior approval was taken from the Board and there was no threat analysis done either.

However, Chawla now brushes off the whole issue.

He had earlier in his defence told the Government that he needed the security after threats to his life from a corrupt DVB union.

“It was important to maintain DVB security personnel as they could identify union officials should they come to my house,” Chawla had said.

The security was hurriedly withdrawn after audit objections and now the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) wants the Government to take action.

“The matter is before the Election Commission so we won’t comment. But if what you say is true, then the Government and the Election Commission should take action,” says BJP Spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The audit report is likely to be tabled in the coming Delhi assembly session.

Legislators may then ask how much of a security threat did Chawla face and was it high enough to run up a bill worth lakhs of rupees at the taxpayers cost.
