EC notice to Deora on oil price cut statement

New Delhi: The Election Commission has issued a notice to Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora for speaking out on the fuel price cut after polls.

A BJP delegation had met the Election Commission on Wednesday morning, seeking action against the Congress.

The BJP says the fuel price cut announcement during the Assembly elections is a clear violation of the model code of conduct.

As the Congress engaged in the battle for states, a helping hand to keep the aam aadmi vote came from Deora on Tuesday.

He said he had written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi saying petrol prices can be cut by Rs 5 and domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 20. However, there was no proposal to reduce the price of diesel.

"Prices have come down. We welcome that and it is natural that if prices come down from $147 to $50 then some thing has to be done," Deora had said on Tuesday.

But with the price cut announcement coming while Assembly elections are on in six states, has also opened the government to charges of violation of the model code of conduct by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party has already gone to the EC citing violation of the model code of conduct.

Faced with charges of political motive behind Deora's announcement, Congress once again played the aam aadmi card.

"For the sake of the people we are prepared to face anything," All-India Congress Committee General Secretary Veerappa Moily said.

Meanwhile, Oil secretary RS Pandey said requests have come in from several political parties for a cut in prices. Oil companies have started making money on petrol and diesel, therefore the Oil Ministry will be sending the proposal to Cabinet.

"Political leaders come to meet officials at the ministry asking whether it is true that oil companies have started gaining on petrol and diesel and I tell them it is and that under recovery has turned into over recovery," he said.
