EC presents online poll results

New Delhi: This time, when the Election Commission (EC) occupied stadiums and got down to the serious business of counting the votes cast in the Assembly elections, they also decided to do something novel.

On its 'counting day' website, the EC had put up a map of India with the states that went to the polls marked clearly on it.

The coloured pin on the map represented the constituencies that went to polls. On clicking on the pin, one could get the latest results from that state. The service was powered by Google.

Google offers a free service called Maps and they also let anybody overlay information on these maps -- it's called a mash-up.

It's an online phenomenon and the EC seems more than happy to jump on the bandwagon.

The only problem -- the EC's servers sometimes took a break from the load of a politically concious online community hungry for the latest.

The EC has been ensuring free and fair elections and they're using Google's free software to make sure you get the results ASAP.
