Lucknow: Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra's debut campaign has run into controversy. First his motorcycle cavalcade was stopped by the Election Commission for flouting the rules and then the EC officer who stopped Vadra's cavalcade Pawan Kumar Sen was transferred to Goa.

However, the EC maintained that this had nothing to do with the Gandhis and Vadra.

It's a bike ride that has landed Vadra into trouble and the Election Comission in the middle of a controversy.

Barely 5 hours after poll observer Pawan Kumar Sen put the break on Vadra's campaign in Amethi for violating the model code of conduct, he was transferred to Goa.

However, in a statement, the Election Commission said, "The officer acted in accordance with the law and fully in conformity with the instructions of the ECI. The decision to post Sen was in process for a week."

Election Commissioner HS Brahma also said that the officer's transfer was a routine process and was in no way linked to the Vadra incident.

The controversy hit the Election Commission just a day ahead of the polls in 55 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, which explains why the Opposition was quick to jump in in its attack on the Gandhis.

BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that the government should explain this. "If the family's son-in-law is stopped by an EC officer, the EC, which is a Constitutional body, transfers the officer for doing his duty. BJP wants an answer from the government on how this happened," he said.

As the Gandhis plan to intensify their campaign over the next few days, the attacks are bound to get shriller. Many within the party feel that the Vadra controversy could just be the beginning.
