Economic crisis to worsen, 51 mn to lose jobs

New Delhi: Finding a job in these gloomy times can be quiet a task. Sankalp is one such individual to have lost his job. He lost his job at an export house some two months ago and is yet to find a new one.

“I don't have a job right now. I’m dependent on my mom I don't like it but I'm not finding work,” says Sankalp.

And if the global slowdown deepens as most analysts are predicting it would, chances of Sankalp finding a job in the next 6 to 8 months looks bleak.

In a recently released report the International Labour organization estimates that 51 mn or 5 crore people across the world could loose their jobs by the end of 2009.

The blood bath though has already begun. This Monday 80,000 people in the US were laid off India hasn't seen such drastic cuts just yet but Motorola announced 500 lay offs in the country on Wednesday.

Campus recruitment is at an all time low and Ratan Tata has asked his 3.5 lakh employees to brace for tougher times.

“While headline job losses haven't happened in India, losses of livelihood of people who aren't on the rolls of big companies, contractual labour is huge,” CEO, Naukari.com, Sanjeev Bhikchandani.

Though the net employment index in the country has tanked 30 percent over the last quarter corporate India doesn't seem to endorse the pessimism of the ILO Report.

According to a survey conducted by Naukri.com, 38 per cent of the 1500 recruiters surveyed anticipated new jobs to be created in 2009. Only 9.5 per cent predicted further layoff.

Unfounded optimisms some would say but given the gloomy times welcome nevertheless.
