Election Commission's decision biased, anti-Dalit: BSP

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) called the decision of the Election Commission (EC) for covering the statues of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and BSP's poll symbol elephant during the assembly election in the state as anti-Dalit.

The BSP said EC's decision to cover Mayawati's statues and elephant is completely wrong and not justified.

"We expected the EC to be fair but EC has not heard us," said party officials.

They said the EC did not listen to the BSP before giving this decision.

The Election Commission also removed UP DGP Braj Lal and Home Secretary Fateh Bahadur as they were Dalits.

"Elephant is definitely an election symbol of BSP but our party symbol has elephant whose trunk is facing downwards. While elephant statues have their trunk facing upwards. Why is EC not taking into the statues and photographs installed in North block and other places.

The party said they will not appeal in the court against EC's decision rather they will go to the public.

The model code of conduct states that the pictures of all candidates on public property must be covered during elections. The same logic would apply to statues as well.
