New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil has approved the Rajya Sabha nomination recommendation for cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and he will now be a Rajya Sabha MP. Sachin Tendulkar accepted the Rajya Sabha nomination proposed by the Congress and became the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai's take on whether the Rajya Sabha is the right pitch for Sachin Tendulkar:
Sachin Tendulkar has been the ultimate icon for millions of Indians. His image could be used to drive numerous public service campaigns, to set up charitable trusts and to be seen as an agent of positive change.
Would being a nominated Rajya Sabha MP help achieve any of this? Tendulkar should adorn Parliament when he has the time and commitment to contribute to it.
Else, he runs the risk of becoming little more than just a well decorated ornament, rarely seen or heard in the august house.
