Kolkata: A young couple from Tripura got an extraordinary gift this Eid. Their eight-month-old son Tofajjal got a new lease of life after doctors successfully removed his medical deformity.
The child was born with a rare deformity. There was a second head growing on top of his head, the head, of a parasitic twin which weighed almost a kilo and had a brain tissue within it. After a five-hour first-of-its-kind surgery at Kolkata's Apollo Gleneagles hospital, it was removed and baby Tofajjal now has a new lease of life.
"I had brought my son here in a critical state. But I am taking him back all cured. The happiness of Ramzaan and the happiness of my child have doubled my happiness," said Tofajjal's mother Sabiya Khatun. "No one said that my child would live and today I am taking him back home," said the little one's father Shah Alam.
Doctors say the primary challenge was to protect a critical component of the brain which regulates blood flow to the brain. "Just to deliver the baby back to his mother was a challenge. They came all the way from a village deep inside Tripura. I have never operated on such a big lesion, a cyst before," said Neuro Surgeon Dr Sisir Das.
The young parents of baby Tofajjal couldn't have celebrated a better Eid, thanks to the extraordinary surgery which gave the baby a fresh lease of life. It is also a message to many others that they need not travel far and wide to treat complicated medical conditions.
