Election day brings on high drama at DU

New Delhi: It seems the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee on students elections were just recommendations. An investigation conducted by CNN-IBN's sister channel IBN 7 and Cobrapost showed clearly the NSUI vice-presidential candidate flouting rules.

“But budding politicians are not convinced,” said VP Candidate, NSUI, Devraj Tehlan.

"There is a big question mark on the authenticity of the expose. We will probe into it,” said NSUI leader Ragini Naik.

But the opposition ABVP seized the opportunity for some last minute campaigning.

"It's not the first time that an NSUI candidate has been caught flouting the rules. This is how they work,” said ABVP leader Nakul Bhargav.

The Supreme Court too has come down heavily on the use of muscle power and money in university elections. It observed:

*Our idea of college elections is student's first leaders later

*Why should lacs of rupees be spent in university elections

*The academic atmosphere should not be spoilt for elections.

*We will have to start a new curriculum for Dadagiri and boothcapturing the way university elections are being conducted.

The ongoing battle between student politicians and the courts also seemed to have an effect on the polling percentage which slipped from 45 per cent recorded last year to just 25 per cent this time around.

It was a day of high drama in Delhi University as the two major student organisations NSUI and ABVP fought for supremacy. The results are to be declared on Saturday which will decide the final winner.
