ElectionS: Muscle power, wrestlers in vogue

New Delhi: They are the biceps behind the BSP, the clout of the Congress. Former policemen, ex-army men, practicing wrestlers are an essential part of political campaigns in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. They help in lending their muscle for a lot of money.

“Closer to elections rates becomes very high. Those who are permanently working with someone they don't leave but those who do they get paid a lot. Between 20-25000,” says Rajendra Singh.

Political parties across North India use wrestlers regularly in their campaigns. Paying anything from 1,000 rupees to one lakh for each man. The bookings are made either directly at akharas- local wrestling training grounds, or in Delhi, where the wrestling kingpins are based. And their duty is to make the candidate look good.

“Lots of times wrestlers go for campaigning with leaders. They stand out in the crowd. Thousands of people go to campaign, but if 4 wrestlers go they will immediately stand out,” says Wrestler, Anuj Choudhary.

“If your bodyguards have weapons on them, then anyone will think twice before doing anything wrong,” says Jairam Devatia.

But wrestlers say they also don't have any choice they have to do something for money.

Retired NSG commandoes and private security officers are in demand this season. And every party which can afford them is paying up.

“Sonia Gandhi, and some top class politicians and also several local MLA,” says Wrestler, Mohit.

Politicians have a tacit understanding with wrestlers. They say that wrestlers like to move around with them simply out of the love and affection they have for their netas.

But the fact is wrestlers help in enhancing the image of a politician and can definitely help in garnering a few votes through strong arm tactics.
