New Delhi: Laptop for $ 10. With just a few weeks to go for polls, UPA government is set to launch the cheapest laptop computer ever seen. Next week, ironically the private sector with its best efforts has not managed to bring down the price of a laptop lower than $ 100 .

Its one the important schemes of the UPA government and it has to be announced before the model code of conduct comes into effect with the election commission announcing poll dates by February end.

Such a scheme holds promise for the young and the restless, like first time voters and MBA aspirant Achintya who for his project has had to borrow a system from his friend for a day.

The ultra low cost device has been developed with the support of IIT Madras, Indian Institute of Science and some Btech students.

It can be charged with a 2 watt power input. It has a 2 GB memory which can be enhanced and configuration that can be upgraded.

"It will be able to project on the monitor of this size," says Secretary Higher Education, R P Agarwal.

Around 20,000 colleges and institutes across the country are being e-connected in the next three years total cost would be Rs 4,600 crores. Seems like an election bonanza by the UPA.
