New Delhi: Arrested NCP MP Padmasinh Patil is pleading innocence in the murder case of his cousin Pawanraje Nimbalkar.
The MP from Osmanabad is not able to rouse much support from his party seniors though.
After his arrest on late Saturday and subsequent remand to CBI till June 14, there has not been much response from NCP leaders.
Padmasinh is known to be in close proximity with NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
But with elections round the corner the NCP leadership is embarrassed with this kind of negative publicity and has gone into a wait-and-watch mode.
"As an NCP head, I will not take any stand as it will jeopardise the investigations,” said Sharad Pawar.
“Till the final decision is out it is not right to target any one particular party... its not right to comment on the issue at this point and time,” said state Home Minister Jayant Patil.
An angry mob of supporters of Padamsinh Patil attacked a CNN-IBN outdoor broadcast van (OB van) when news of his arrest had spread to his constituency, Osmanabad.
Pawanraje Nimbalkar was shot dead at Navi Mumbai in 2006. It was the confessional statement of prime accused Parasmal Jain that nailed Padmasinh Patil.
Jain told the CBI that he was told to kill Nimbalkar, at Padmasinh Patil's behest.
Padmasingh was allegedly angry that Nimbalkar helped expose fraudulent deals involing his sugar mills.
For the Nimbalkars, it’s been a long hard battle for justice.
“I had been chasing up the matter so that it be handed over to CBI. Even that has taken three to four months,” said Om Prakash Nimbalkar, son of the slain leader.
During election season the arrest of a former home minister comes as a major setback for the NCP's image in the state.
In the days ahead the CBI will have to build a watertight case on this politically explosive issue.
