Mush mulls emergency in Pak

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Pakistani President General Musharraf is reportedly considering declaring emergency in the country to tide over security lapses and political instability.

Agencies report that Musharraf is also wary of a face off with Opposition parties over his re-election plans.

The country has also seen a spate of suicide bombings by militants groups, allegedly linked to the Taliban, in last two weeks.

On Saturday, a suicide bomber was killed by his own bomb in the town of Dera Ismail Khan.

An official said the imposition of emergency by the President would be an option and if the proclamation is endorsed by a joint-sitting of the Parliament it would automatically extend the term of the National Assembly for a period not exceeding one year and not extending, in any case, beyond a period of six months after the proclamation has ceased to be in force.

"The government is privy to secret consultations of the Opposition to launch agitation by opting for politics of destruction. In that case, the proclamation of emergency would be a must," PTI quoted the officer as saying.

However, many of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q, (PML-Q) leaders felt that there was no such move in the offing as no such circumstances existed that called for the imposition of emergency, The News reported.
