Osmanabad (Maharashtra): A day after violent protests against Dalit killings ripped off Maharashtra, hundreds of Dalits in Osmanabad area took out a peaceful rally showing their agitation over the incident.
"They killed my husband ruthlessly. We are always targeted because of our caste. Now I am left with nothing. Who will feed my kids?" said Usha Mane whose husband was killed in the violence that broke out on Thursday. A day after Usha and Seema Shingade— the two Dalit ladies who lost their husbands as police fired into a crowd of Dalit protestors—mourned the tragedy.
Reportedly Dalits in Osmanabad are simmering with anger. They are questioning the futility of violence that cost two lives and left these widows to fend for their families.
"Is this what the government has ordered? Kill and shoot our people. We are being targeted," Bhanabai Shingare victim's mother said.
The Dalit community says they are victims of police brutality and caste violence.
"It was a quiet agitation and police opened fire without a warning. It is quiet unfortunate. Our community is demanding justice," Dalit lawyer Suresh Mallale said.
As the state gears up for its upcoming municipal elections, Osmanabad incident is being seen by many as an attempt to divide the Dalit vote. The community is on the edge and even a slight provocation could trigger more such emotional outbursts.
