New Delhi: Delhi Police's top encounter specialist was murdered on Monday night in Gurgaon.

ACP (Crime Branch) Rajbir Singh was killed at around 8.45 PM, allegedly by a property dealer.

The accused, Vijay Bhardwaj surrendered to the Gurgaon Police after Singh's body was found in his shop - Vijay Associates..

In an initial confession, Bhardwaj stated that Rajbir Singh had been after his life.

Apparently, Rajbir Singh reached Vijay Bhardwaj's shop near Gurgaon's IFFCO Chowk at around 8 PM. Barely 45 minutes later, he was shot thrice at point-blank range and killed.

Though Bhardwaj claims that he surrendered, Gurgaon Police maintain that they nabbed him.

Police sources say that the motive behind the incident was a dispute over property on Gurgaon's MG Road, which is worth several crores.

Rajbir Singh was involved in over 56 encounters and had joined Delhi Police in 1982. Singh was the recipient of the President's Medal for Bravery several times. He was involved in several leading cases such as the Red Fort shoot-out and the attack on Parliament. He was given Category Z security cover.

Following allegations of corruption, Rajbir Singh had been transferred from the Special Cell.
