Jaipur: Rajasthan's influential marble lobby may be under the scanner for allegedly paying the police to kill Sohrabuddin Sheikh. But the marble traders in the state have come out strongly in support of IPS officer MN Dinesh—one of the accused in the Gujarat fake encounter case.

The traders’ community in Rajasthan says Alwar SP MN Dinesh single-handedly helped them fend off the dreaded extortionists. Voices protesting the arrest of this man are getting louder.

“We feel his intentions were not wrong, his intentions were to punish the culprits and criminals,” says OM Agarwal, leader of the traders association of Udaipur.

Sources say Sohrabuddin was running an extortion racket with other extortionists in Udaipur who lived off the influential marble lobby in Rajasthan. The traders claim the extortion threats were checked only after Dinesh took over as the SP of Udaipur.

“Traders of the marble industry used to get threat calls from extortionists and terrorists. When SP Dinesh came here, he took action and the calls stopped and everyone was peacefully carrying on with their business,” said Prabhas Rajgharia, president of the marble traders association in Udaipur.

The traders are now demanding Dinesh's release.

“We demand from the government and home ministry that they should look into the matter and release him with due honour. He deserves to be respected as an honest officer,” he added.

With the marble lobby's role in the Sohrabuddin case being under scrutiny the ruling BJP in Rajasthan is likely to be under the scanner. The proximity of a section of the party to the marble traders is far from covert.
