End of nuclear deal not the end of Govt: PM

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday indicated that the Government is willing to put the Indo-US nuclear deal on the backburner.

"The end of the nuclear deal will not mean the end of the Government. We are not a one-issue Government. The deal not coming through is not the end of life, " Singh said.

The disappointment seeping through this voice and even his body language. A Prime Minister coming through as let down by all the political scheming around him all the ally talk all that onslaught from the Left.

His cherished nuclear deal may not go through atleast for now. His Government wants to serve out its full term.

"If the deal does not come through, that is not the end of life," he said. "But we are trying to reconcile the divergent points of view. I have not given up hope. Reason and common sense will ultimately will win the day; we are after all in the realm of politics."

Even his political mentor echoed his thoughts.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said, “We need to go till the end of the full term. and though we will try to bring about a consensus on the nuke issue, we are certainly not in favour of elections. We are not looking for a confrontation with the Left because it is not coalition dharma."

But the Prime Minister couldn’t hide his disillusionment with real politick.

"In an age of competitive politics, politicians tend to become short-term maximisers. It is for this reason that democratic and plural societies need a social group capable of long-term thinking," Singh added.

But does it really mean an end of the nuclear deal? It definitely is the clearest indication yet of a go-slow and going by the first major admission of the big two, the ally pressure has worked.

In the end the Government, as Prime Minister said, didn't want to perceive as a single issue Government.
