Engineer becomes thief to recover business losses

New Delhi: In order to recover his business losses, a 43-year-old software engineer stole jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from his neighbour's flat but landed in the police net, police said on Friday.

Debashish Dutta, a resident of Shyam Vihar Phase-II in west Delhi's Dwarka, was arrested on Thursday for stealing jewellery from Shikha Paul's flat.

Paul informed the police that she resides at Vizag in Andhra Pradesh with her husband. In October 2011, she had come to Delhi for a short stay.

The software engineer stole jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from his neighbour\'s flat.

"While returning to Vizag, she locked her flat and handed over the keys to her relative Dutta. On May 4, when she again visited at her Delhi flat, she found it ransacked, with jewellery items stolen. She raised suspicions over her relative Debashish and maid Dharmwati," said Anil Kumar Ojha, Additional Commissioner of Police.

During interrogation, Dutta, a software engineer by profession, revealed that he was running a software company at Kakrola.

"Last year, the business sunk and he incurred a huge loss and was shattered economically. To compensate the loss, he stole the gold jewellery. After stealing jewellery, he pawned the same with Muthoot Gold finance company and took a loan of Rs 1,30,000," added Ojha.
