Engineer murder: UP police defends itself, Maya

CNN-IBN

On Wednesday, Manoj Gupta, an engineer with the PWD was beaten to death allegedly by BSP MLA Rajneesh Tiwari. After killing the engineer, the MLA took the dead body to the local police station where police reportedly went into a hasty damage control.

UP DGP Vikram Singh spoke with CNN-IBN and clarified the police stand.

CNN-IBN: The first charge against your police is that they were late in registering an FIR against the MLA.

Vikram Singh: No. I don’t. I think the UP police have come out professionally. FIR was registered at 6:20 am. One main accused Shekhar Tiwari, MLA of the ruling party has also been arrested at 5:30 in the evening. That explains that in less than 24 hours the main accused was arrested. Therefore I see no reason that UP police should be castigated.

CNN-IBN: Have you been able to figure out the motive of the killing?

Vikram Singh: This is a matter of serious investigation. We have just been able to get hold of Mr Tiwari. Mrs Gupta, the complainant who has lodged the FIR says that the two people who were there and bullying her husband were saying that the earlier executive engineer was very pliable but you are very difficult and don’t sign the bills promptly. Therefore, one of the possible reasons can be official disagreement as also matter pertaining to various commissions at various levels.

CNN-IBN: The allegation against the MLA is that he was collecting extortion money for Mayawati's birthday.

Vikram Singh: I am not aware of any such statements or allegations and if there are any such statements, I would be grateful and obliged. The gentleman can come forward and give his statement to the investigating officer please.

CNN-IBN: But when Mayawati was the CM there have been several ministers and MPs who have been put behind bars.

Vikram Singh: I would like to have your observation more circumspect and appropriate. UP is the only state where two Cabinet ministers behind bars. It has one MP and one MLA and now another MLA of the ruling party behind bars.

CNN-IBN: Tomorrow is Samajwadi Party bandh.

Vikram Singh: We are fully aware we have the intelligence inputs and we'll take care of any situation that arises tomorrow or subsequently.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh told CNN-IBN that Mayawati government must be made accountable. “This is a clear cut case of organised crime and terror where MLAs, MPs and coordinators of BSP are being used. So what (if) Mayawati is Chief Minister. The new terror laws are being made by Chidambaram, it is a fit case for promulgating that terror law in case of Mayawati. I will also request the UP Governor TV Rajeshwar to get note of this. We want centre to intervene and this is not only I am talking about like this. We all have political differences but the way Sonia ji was treated in Raebarielly and Rahul was treated in Kanpur, she (Mayawati) does not have any courtesy. Even in Delhi, she organised a huge rally and said she was a Goddess, whatever you want to pay, pay to me,” he said.
