London: After their 3-0 victory in the Ashes, England have rested five senior players - Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad - from the one-day international series against Ireland and Australia.
In Cook's absence, Eoin Morgan will lead the team in the one-off ODI against Ireland and five versus Australia. The resting of five senior players has resulted in five fresh faces while Kevin Pietersen has also been named in the 14-member squad.
The new look-ins include Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry, who has had a good limited-overs season so far, Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance and fast bowlers Jamie Overton, Chris Jordan and Boyd Rankin. Carberry previously played one Test in Bangladesh in 2010, while Irishman Rankin donned the England colours for a T20I against New Zealand earlier this year. Overton, 19, and Barbados-born Jordan impressed for the England Lions against Bangladesh A recently. The Zimbabwean-born Ballance was named in the T20I squad for two fixtures against New Zealand, but did not debut.
Paceman Chris Jordan has been included for the first time.
"Following a very intense period of cricket this summer we have decided to rest a number of senior players which will allow them to recover from a heavy workload over the last three months and to prepare for the tour of Australia which begins in eight weeks," said national selector Geoff Miller. "This creates an excellent opportunity for players who have impressed in county cricket and for England Lions recently to test themselves at international level as we continue to build a squad ahead of the World Cup, which is less than 18 months away.
"There are a number of very experienced one-day players in the squad alongside players who are new to international cricket and we are expecting a very tough challenge both from a strong Ireland side and then from Australia in what will no doubt be a very competitive series."
England will face Australia for two T20Is on August 29 and 31, followed by their short trip to Dublin for a one-off ODI. They will return home to play five ODIs against Australia starting September 6.
