New Delhi: Activist Teesta Setalvad has welcomed the decision of the SIT to summon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for questioning in the 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre case.
"It was long overdue. Very welcome but not enough," Teesta Setalvad told CNN-IBN.
On Thursday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), appointed by the Supreme Court and currently headed by R K Raghavan, had summoned Narendra Modi to appear before it on 21 March.
"The summon is in response to Zakia Hasan Jafri and Citizens for Justice and Peace together filing a petition to the Supreme Court," said Setalvad.
Setalvad has also demanded that the first information report (FIR) be lodged against Modi and others in the 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre case in which 69 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri were killed by rioting mob.
"We are hoping that the summons is a step towards the registration of first information report which means really that the prima facie evidence to accused Modi of conspiracy into mass murder."
She said that allowing FIR to be registered against Modi is the real question that needs to be answered by SIT Chief R K Raghavan.
Speaking about the legal recourse available to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Setalvad said that he did not have any. She nevertheless said that Narendra Modi could use some dilatory tactics.
"I would assume that Modi cannot refuse to appear. He might do some dilatory tactics. Maybe put some obstacles around the way but I think he would have to answer those questions."
