New Delhi: It's an attempt to record and rank some of the most polluted industrial clusters in the country using scientific indictators. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with IIT-Delhi is in the process of developing yardsticks for the industrial clusters across the country.
Minister for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh said, "The CPCB and State Pollution Control Board should prepare action plans for the 10 critically polluted areas and 33 seriously polluted areas."
Out of 88 industrial clusters in the list, nearly half are critically polluted. They include Wapi and Ankleshwar in Gujarat, Ranipet in Tamil Nadu, Trombay near Mumbai, Korba in Chhattisgarh and Singrauli in Uttar Pradesh - which were also included in 24 "environmental hotspots" identified by the Government in 1989.
Jairam Ramesh said, "In my view, no industry should be allowed to come up in already polluted areas unless the situation comes under control there."
While the ranking maybe an essential exercise to document the damage, the Government is still to work out a funding mechanism to clean up India's most polluted industrial hubs.
