Erstwhile Hitler Cafe caters to Jews

Mumbai: Cross Cafe in Navi Mumbai was at the center of protests in August last year over it's controversial choice of name.

Earlier named Hitler's Cross, Cross Cafe is seeing a change of name and attitude. In fact, it's also seeing a gathering of Mumbai's Jewish community as they gathered to commemorate the Holocaust Remembrance Day with prayers and a special screening of documentaries on the holocaust.

Says Director, Cross Café, Puneet Sablok, "Now the controversy is over and the Jews are good friends with us. I had invited them and they're here today and it feels very good."

And the bonhomie is reciprocated by the Jewish Community.

Says Naomi Massil, "It's great that the owner of the restaurant realised and rectified his error and came up with the idea of Holocaust Remembrance Day."

This is the first such meeting in India after the resolution to celebrate 27 January as the Holocaust Remembrance Day initiated by Israel was passed unanimously in the General Assembly.

The Jewish community in India see it as an opportunity to educate everyone on the holocaust

Says Country Manager, The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Elijah Jacob, "Even though in India we have never seen any anti-semitism, we think it is important to educate the people and the society we live in about the Holocaust, what it means and derive meaning from it and ensure that such a thing never happens again."

It's a message that not too many would dispute and the Cross Cafe's effort was a fitting way to pay tribute to the people who lost their lives in the genocide that has haunted the world for more than 60 years.
