Ethics debate over passport scam

New Delhi: The fake passport scam net involving Members of Parliament across party lines has opened a can of worms on the state of Indian politics.

There has been widespread discontent and Parliament has come under severe criticism over the deteriorating ethics and standards.

On Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee looked to salvage some lost pride and said Parliament should not be condemned for the action of a few MPs.

Speaking after an all-party meet, the Speaker made some hasty assurances. “This calls for special meeting to decide on fate of accused MPs," said Chatterjee.

However, despite the assurances, sources tell CNN-IBN that expelling the MPs allegedly involved in the emigration racket will not be easy. It is likely that a decision will be taken only after the criminal investigations are completed

Police have already issued notices to the four MPs involved out of whom three - BJP's Ramswaroop Koli, BSP's Mohammad Tahir Khan and Ashok Kumar Rawat – have responded and said they'll join the investigations soon. BSP's Mitrasen Yadav is yet to respond.

Police have asked the Ministry of External Affairs for details of trips made by the accused MPs.

Meanwhile, Opposition leaders have decided the issue should be referred to the Ethics Committee of Parliament.

"Parliament should take action against every MP who acts in an unethical way. All these cases, the ethics committee or other committee should look into such cases so that parliament MPs should not be discredited in the eyes of people. We want strong action to be taken," said BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
