Even elephants need exercise

Vandalur (Tamil Nadu): All elephants between six months to 11 years at the Vandalur Zoological Park in Tamil Nadu have to be up early.

The zoo authorities have chalked out a fitness regime for them.

The step is taken to prevent elephants in captivity from gaining weight.

A strict diet will also be maintained as a part of the programme.

"(What) elephants are being fed in the zoo is mainly fodder. Other nutritious foodstuffs are ragi, sugarcane, jaggery, coconut etc. These supplement as nutrients (that are) generally not available," says Vandalur Zoological Park Chief Conservator P L Ananthsamy.

Surprisingly, this whole effort is attracting tourists specially children who seem to be enjoying watching elephants sweating out.
