EVMs are tamper proof: Election Commission

New Delhi: The use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) is being vigorously debated after former Delhi chief secretary Omesh Saigal triggered a debate on the issue.

“Just like your telephone chip, this chip can also be changed,’ Saigal says.

The Election Commission however did not agree to this and made it clear that Saigal has not made any demonstration before it and the current EVMs have been endorsed by both High Court and the Supreme Court.

The EC’s reaction came after leader of the Opposition L K Advani also cast doubts over the voting machines. Some BJP candidates in the party national executive last month complained of EVM malfunction linking it to the electoral debacle in the General Elections.

Now the party wants Election Commission to revert back to any alternate process of casting votes at least for the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly polls slated later this year.

But the Congress is against any such proposal.

So far the Election Commission hasn't ordered any enquiry.

"The hype that some people are creating about the EVMs is uncalled for. They need to rethink about it. You can't compare apples with oranges, the machines that are used abroad in some European countries are operating system based machines, but our EVMs are not operating system based thats why they can't be tampered with. I am in Chennai right now, and here some people who were supposed to win, did not win and that is why they are blaming the machine. If someone can tamper with EVMs then he should be given a nobel prize. Someone is saying that he can prepare a program and then incorporate it in the EVM and interfere in its functioning, but that hasn't happened yet and it is nonsensical absolutely."
— Former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswamy told CNN-IBN
