New Delhi: On the eve of International day against drug abuse, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Government of India organised a special function Recovery Night drug addicts who are now on the road to recovery.
Recovery Night was an effort to salute the fighting spirits of those who try hard to fight their addiction.
On show were puppetry and pantomimes and a special concert by pop band Aryan. The recovering addicts themselves presented many of the performances.
Recovering from drug addiction is not easy. And no one else but those who undergo the process know it the best.
For 17 years, Sampat was a drug addict. He did almost every kind of drug including smack, hashish, cannabis and even injectable drugs. He tried them all for the sake of fun.
But even now, the memory of the pain he underwent while his recovering process, gives him goose bumps.
But he believes that nothing but his own self-determination and will power helped him recover from his drug addiction.
“Recovery and rehabilitation go hand in hand. Its very rare, very lucky for an addict, if he goes in for treatment and comes out recovered,” says Sampat.
Similar is the story of Jia Lal , a cook in Delhi. He fell for drugs 12 years ago. He started with the recovery process last year.
And he shudders when he thinks of what he lost to drugs., the most what he regrets is that he lost his family's trust.
“My bothers and sisters would not speak to me properly. I had no respect in my own home. They stopped trusting me with any money. I had lost trust of my family members”, says Jia Lal.
Recovery Night was a attempt to encourage more and more people suffering from this addiction so that people like Sampat and Jia Lal come out in the open and face their fears.
Recovery is a painful process but at the end if a drug addict recovers , it is his celebration of his will power and empowerment.
It is all about taking life forward from darkness to sunshine for them and they try their level best for making it possible.
