As Board exams come calling, CNN-IBN addresses issues that matter for all students gearing up for the exams in a special series Cracking the Code.
New Delhi: Nine-hundred-and-twenty-nine schools, nine lakh, fifty three thousand, four hundred and sixty eight students and the highest board exam scorers five years in a row, if anyone is cracking the code it is the country wide Kendriya Vidhyalaya Sangathan.
“The keywords behind the success are the five Ds; devotion, dedication, determination, diligence and discipline,” says principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Indu Kaushik.
But is it just the five Ds or is it something else?
“Most of these students come from services background. They don't have any family business to fall back upon. They have to carve out a niche for themselves and most of them are first generation learners,” says English teacher, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kavita Rakhera.
A quick comparison shows that Kendriya Vidyalayas are head and shoulders above the rest.
In class XII board exams Kendriya Vidyalayas had a 10 percent lead
| CLASS XII | |||||
| 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | |
| Kendriya Vidyalaya | 86.46% | 88.67% | 92.75% | 92.47% | 92.89% |
| Independent Schools | 83.32% | 81.07% | 80.46% | 81.28% | 82.35% |
And in class X too they are the leaders.
| CLASS X | |||||
| 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | |
| Kendriya Vidyalaya | 85.60% | 84.60% | 90.44% | 89.95% | 90.63% |
| Independent Schools | 85.60% | 83.40% | 84.80% | 85.87% | 85.94% |
There is no strategy or game plan behind the success of students from Kendriya Vidyalayas. It's just hard work and determination that makes these students stand out.
“I have already finished my syllabus three times…I'm solving sample papers now. I study for approximately fifteen hours everyday,” says class XII student, Sadiq Nagar Kendriya Vidyalaya, Lavi Tripathi.
“I have also finished my syllabus twice,” says another class XII student, Sadiq Nagar Kendriya Vidyalaya, Surojit Surar.
But it's not just class 12 students who we found slogging in the Chemistry lab. Hidden away in a dark corner of his room at home was Abhiskek Pandey. His school is expecting him to emerge as the next class X topper.
“I am not at all nervous. I have already finished my syllabus and am now solving sample papers,” says Abhishek.
So the five Ds could really be the secret behind success of Kendriya Vidyalayas
Here are also some of the major concerns that IBNLive.com readers wrote in. Principal
Tagore International School, Madhulika Sen answers them.
Sai Mali (Chennai): In the CBSE sample papers book, the marks split up for various chapters is given. Does the Board stick to the format while setting the paper?
Madhulika Sen: As far as the division of the marks chapter-wise that are given in the sample papers are concerned, a lot of questions come on that basis. There could be a few changes but by and large a number of questions with the marks specifications are based on the sample questions papers.
Priya (Kerala): I want to know if students are allowed to use the science data book (log book) during Physics and Chemistry exams?
Madhulika Sen: You may not be allowed to take the logbooks in to the examination hall. It depends on the school that you have a centre. But the schools are supposed to provide logbooks for Physics, Maths or any of the subjects where logbooks are needed.
