'High profile people suspects in Malegaon blasts'

Nashik: A retired Army officer and his associate, who are members of a right wing Hindu organisation, were on Wednesday sent to police custody till November 10 in connection with the Malegaon bomb blasts last month.

Major (retd.) Ramesh Upadhyay, founder of an organisation called Abhinav Bharat, and Sameer Kulkarni, a member of the same group, will be in the custody of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Mumbai police, ordered a court in Nashik.

The ATS told the court it wanted the custody of two men to ascertain the involvement of certain “high profile people” in the case.

Upadhyay and Kulkarni are suspected to have trained the people who planted low-intensity bombs in Malegaon on the night of September 29. Six persons were killed and several others were injured in the town when the bombs exploded.

Abhinav Bharat is an obscure organisation and it claims to be "training" Hindus on how to fight terrorists. It was formed in 2006 and on in its website claims it aims to combat terrorism and rebuilding the nation around Hindu culture.

Kulkarni is a former member of the BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The ATS alleges Kulkarni and another suspect Pragya Singh Thakur, a Hindu woman ascetic and also a former member of the ABVP, knew each other well and communicated with each other before the blasts.

Kulkarni, Thakur and two other persons arrested in connection with the blasts allegedly had a series of meetings, one of which was held at the Bhosala Military School in Nashik.

Himani Savarkar, president of Abhinav Bharat, though rejected allegations against the group. "Kulkarni is an honest man and a true Hindu. He will neither tolerate nor practice injustice," said Savarkar.
