New Delhi: An IAS officer has alleged that the Haryana Wakf Board, the custodian of religious properties of Muslims in the state, is involved in corrupt land deals.
M Shayin, a former CEO of the Wakf Board, has prepared a report which accuses board members of profiteering through illegal sale of land. “I have given a report in which I have shown that how the chairman and members of the Wakf board are involved in disposing of Wakf property for their personal gains. Money, which should have gone to the board’s treasury, has been taken away by the chairman and these board members,” says Shayin.
The report alleges a six-acre plot in Choma Tehsil in Gurgaon which was marked in records as urban land was converted to rural land and leased out for Rs 25,000 a year. The deal came under suspicion, as the board had been earning Rs 60,000 rupees annually from the plot since 1997.
The board allegedly leased out a lucrative 900-square-yard plot in Garhi Harsaro village in Gurgaon for Rs 5,000 a month to Gateway Distriparks Ltd., a container transport company, which demolished a mosque on the plot.
The report says the Board leased out 225 square yards in Nagina distrct to the chairperson’s son-in-law who built and let out shops without permission. Institutions run by the chairman's family are also reported to have got over Rs 30 lakh from the wakf.
Board chairperson Hamid Hussain rejected the allegations and said he is ready to face an investigation. “The allegations are hundred percent untrue. The government can order an enquiry—nothing can remain hidden. This is a charitable organisation,” he said.
According to the law, Wakf properties cannot be sold and have to be either leased to the highest bidder or rented out for three years or less.
Supreme Court lawyer Imtiaz Ahmad says the Centre has the power to dissolve the wakf board if it’s working against the interests of the organization.
“The chairman and members of the board have to act according to certain conditions. If conditions are violated and if the chairman or the members are acting in a manner contrary to the interest of the board or wakf properties, then the Central government will have a general ground to dissolve the board,” says Ahmad.
The Haryana government says it will take action if the allegations are found to be true.
