Exclusive: MP, DIG's verbal duel over Nandigram

CRPF DIG Alok Raj, who is in Nandigram due to the ongoing panchayat polls, was caught in a verbal duel with MP Laxman Seth regarding the law and order situation there.

CPI-M has charged Raj with dereliction of duty. The DIG is accused of not being able to control his personnel from harassing people in Nandigram.

Following is the volatile telephone conversation between Raj and Seth:

Laxman Seth: I rang you up and you handed over the phone to somebody else.

Alok Raj: No, sir. I was busy doing something. I am taking your call.

Laxman Seth: You are an official of the Government of India, you should be available on phone.

Alok Raj: My phone is open since morning and I have received some 100 calls.

Laxman Seth: I am hurt, I tried calling you but...

Alok Raj: I am also very hurt sir that there is a false FIR lodged against me. Why? What wrong have I done?

Laxman Seth: Under your command...how is CRPF going about doing its thing?

Alok Raj: No sir. Let me clarify to you...Mr AK Sarkar who is the IG of West Bengal has given in writing that CRPF will act as per the existing SOP and the existing area of responsibility. And it was understood that CRPF will go with the local police and magistrate…Mr Seth how can you direct me on whether I should move on or stay in my camp?

Laxman Seth: You should stay...

Alok Raj: No, no you cannot do that. You cannot confine me to my camp. I am sorry.
