Third Front dead? CPM denies grand alliance

New Delhi: What started as an ambitious alternative, may be dead even before elections get over. The CPM, which mooted the idea of a Third Front, now says there is no grand alliance, at least officially.

Senior party leader Sitaram Yechury told Network-18 that the CPM has merely signed state-level alliances with parties like the BJD and the TDP and that a clear picture will emerge only after polls.

The key issue that has weakened the Front has been its Prime Ministerial candidature, with members like the BSP and the AIADMK blowing hot and cold. Yechury said a decision will be taken later.

“There is no Third Front as of now. It's a state level arrangement of many secular parties,” he said.

Asked if India will see a Prime Minister by the Left parties, Yechury simply said, “I am not saying anything now. We'll decide after the polls”.
