Sharda Jain was convicted of getting Congress councillor Atma Ram Gupta, 50, killed allegedly because he was cheating her. Seven other persons, including three UP Police officials, were also found guilty.
Jain and Gupta were Congress members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and were allegedly having an affair.
A Sessions Court held Jain guilty on two charges of kidnapping and murdering Gupta. Jain’s brother Raj Kumar Jain and four men, Roshan Singh, Rajender alias Raju, Pushpender and Nirvikar, who carried out the murder were also convicted.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Sripal Raghav and Constables Satender and Rakesh Kumar, were found guilty of destruction of evidence. Roshan Singh, Pushpender and Nirvikar were also convicted under sections related to the Arms Act.
Gupta, who represented the Tri Nagar ward, disappeared in August 24 and his body was found in Western UP later. He attended a public meeting of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and was last seen travelling with Jain in her car.
Gupta reportedly brought Jain, a former school headmistress, into politics and helped her get a Congress ticket for the corporation elections in 2002.
The MCD suspended Jain, councillor from Keshav Puram, in February 2004, citing that she had been absent from the House without intimation for three months.
